Ovechkin nears all-time goals record in NHL [video]

NHL Playoffs Update: New York Islanders and Tampa Bay Lightning Secure Vital Wins

Washington Capitals’ star forward Alexander Ovechkin inched closer to Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL goal-scoring record, netting his 855th career goal in a 6-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. The 39-year-old Russian scored in the final minute of the game, hitting an empty net, leaving him just 39 goals shy of Gretzky’s historic mark of 894. Despite a slow start to this season with only two goals in six games, Ovechkin could come close to catching the legendary Canadian by season’s end.

Capitals Extend Winning Streak

After a tough season opener, the Capitals have found their groove, securing their fifth consecutive win against the Flyers. Connor McMichael scored twice, while Taylor Raddysh and Nic Dowd added goals to give Washington a 4-0 lead midway through the second period. Philadelphia fought back with goals from Travis Konecny, Owen Tippett, and Matvei Michkov, but late goals from Ovechkin and Pierre-Luc Dubois sealed the win.

Flyers’ Struggles Continue

The loss extends Philadelphia’s losing streak to six games after a promising opening-night victory. Despite showing some resilience in the third period, the Flyers were unable to stop the Capitals’ strong offense. Washington now looks poised to continue their momentum, while Ovechkin’s pursuit of Gretzky’s record remains a major storyline this NHL season.
