Paris 2024: Organizers Seek Backup Plans for Open Water Swimming and Triathlon

As the Paris 2024 Olympic Games approach, organizers are faced with a significant challenge: ensuring the safety and viability of the Seine River for open water events. With concerns over water quality, they are developing contingency plans to avoid disruptions.

The Risk of E. Coli and the Need for Alternatives

Recent tests showed fluctuating levels of E. coli in the Seine, making the river’s suitability for events like triathlon and long-distance swimming uncertain. While organizers remain hopeful that good weather will keep bacterial levels low, they acknowledge the need for a „Plan B.”

Potential Relocation and Event Modifications

For long-distance swimming, Vaires-sur-Marne is being considered as an alternative venue, where rowing and canoeing events will also take place. In the case of the triathlon, the competition might be modified to a duathlon format if swimming in the Seine is deemed unsafe. Organizers are committed to finding solutions that ensure the smooth running of these Olympic events.
