The Polish beach volleyball teams have successfully advanced to the quarterfinals of the Nations Cup in Jurmala, Latvia. This tournament serves as the final stage of European qualifications for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The Nations Cup features national teams composed of two duos per country, with 12 teams in each gender category divided into four groups. Matches are determined by the best of two games, with a „golden set” tiebreaker if needed.
Path to the Quarterfinals
In the women’s competition, the Polish pairs Jagoda Śliwka and Aleksandra Wachowicz, alongside Katarzyna Kociołek and Kinga Wojtasik, who competed in the Rio Olympics, performed impressively. They secured victories against Belgium and the Czech Republic in the group stage. The Polish women will face the Netherlands in the quarterfinals.
On the men’s side, Piotr Kantor and Jakub Zdybek, along with Maciej Rudol and Filip Lejawa, emerged from their group after a win against Switzerland and a loss to Norway, advancing to the quarterfinals from the second position. Their next opponents are yet to be determined.
Road to Paris 2024
The top teams from each gender category in the Nations Cup will earn direct qualification to the Paris 2024 Olympics. Last year’s world champions from Mexico, the Czech and American teams, have already secured their spots. Hosts France also have guaranteed places, while 17 teams were selected based on the Olympic ranking finalized on Monday. Among these are Poland’s Michał Bryl and Bartosz Łosiak. The final five Olympic berths will be decided through continental qualifiers, with the Nations Cup serving as Europe’s deciding competition.
