The European Championships in Rome faced heavy criticism from athletes for poor organization, especially concerning the quality of meals provided. Poland’s top sprinter, Ewa Swoboda, did not hold back in expressing her frustration over the inadequate food and other logistical issues, which she claimed were the worst she had encountered in her career. Despite winning a silver medal in the 100 meters, Swoboda’s overall experience at the event was marred by dissatisfaction.
Athletes Voice Concerns Over Meals
Swoboda, along with other Polish athletes, pointed out the unappetizing and unsuitable meals served before their events, including instances where chicken ham was provided instead of proper meat. Magda Stefanowicz and Kryscina Cimanouska also voiced their discontent, highlighting that the lack of proper nutrition impacted their performance. The situation was so dire that even journalists had to struggle to find drinkable water.
Relay Team’s Disappointment in the Final
In the women’s 4×100 meter relay final, the Polish team faced additional disappointment when a botched baton exchange prevented them from finishing the race. Swoboda reflected on the incident, expressing regret for the missed opportunity and emphasizing the team’s potential to break national records. Despite the setback, her teammates praised her leadership and motivational support.
Medal Tally and Future Aspirations
Poland finished the European Championships with a total of six medals: two gold, two silver, and two bronze, securing ninth place in the medal standings. Italy dominated the competition with 24 medals, including 11 golds. Looking ahead, Swoboda remains optimistic about the team’s future, hoping to leverage the experience gained in Rome for better performances in upcoming events, including the 2024 Paris Olympics.
